As I made this pen, working the wood, squaring the old twisted wood, cleaning out the worm eaten and weather beaten planks. Pouring the resin and carefully turning the wood down. Sealing it and preserving its story, i was reminded of the day i bought those old planks.
You see, its white oak. But not just any white oak. Its from Bluegrass downs. The race track in Kentucky. And as I picked out my planks I noticed one had some initials on it.

Naturally I asked the man unloading the wood about it. He was from Paducah he might know. It turns out he did.
Old Henry.

You see Henry was a well respected man in his circle. And he was often fixing something for someone, or helping build something for someone... but it didn't matter what he was making he always snuck in the letters HCW.

His first name was Henry, but Connie was his wife's name. And he did everything he could to immortalize the love they shared.
Now the wood was old and beaten and needed a little tender love and care. But those initials were as bright as day. And as I filled those voids and missing parts with resin I made sure it was pink to preserve the love.

Stories like that speak to me, its rare to see such love. And carving your initials together like that only makes it point out and resonate. Which is why I added a laser pointer to the pen. Not only is that love peaking through the wood showing a bright pink but there's a laser pointer built in to showcase the need to stand out and let things be known.

Even now the story of Henry and Connie still makes me tear up a little. But I'm proud to have been told such a story, and proud to be able to preserve such love with my work.
